RGC ended a run of three straight defeats with an impressive 43-21 home win over Llanelli.
The Gogs’ got back to winning ways with a dazzling attacking display in front of a large crowd at Stadiwm Zip World in Colwyn Bay, and they now have a mini-break after their game at Cardiff next weekend was put back until March 13.
A nervy start from both sides saw them wasteful in possession during the opening exchanges, but the hosts drew first blood when Harri Evans broke free and went over for the game’s first try. Billy McBryde added the extras.
This seemed to relax the home side and they extended their advantage soon after when Afon Bagshaw crossed the white wash for an easy score after some sensational approach play by Danny Cross. McBryde despatched his second conversion of the contest.
Another blistering attack on 34 minutes presented an opportunity to Rhys Tudor, and the explosive winger made no mistake for RGC’s third touch down to pull them further clear. McBryde once again added the extras.
There was further cause for celebration immediately following the restart when skipper Tom Hughes went over for the bonus point try on 37 minutes, and the Gogs’ skipper bundled his way over the line with a minute remaining of the first period for his brace , which was converted by McBryde to give the home side a commanding 33-point advantage at the break.
The outstanding Cross got his name on the score-sheet shortly after the interval for the hosts, but Llanelli picked up the tempo and managed to score two consolation tries in quick succession through Nathan Hart and Ifan Beynon-Thomas, both of which were converted by Ioan Hughes.
RGC put the final nail in the visitors’ coffin on 77 minutes when another well-worked move saw Rhodri King dot over for an unconverted score, and despite another try from scrum-half Beynon-Thomas and extras from Hughes in the closing moments it failed to take the gloss of an immensely improved display from the Gogs.
The Indigo Group Premiership outfit return to competitive action on February 15 when they entertain a strong Carmarthen Quins side.
