CPD Y Rhyl 1879 maintained their place at the top of the Ardal North West League with a thumping 4-0 home victory against Llangefni on Saturday (February 25).

Prior to the game getting underway, the crowd observed a flawless and respectful minute’s silence in memory of Llangefni Town’s former manager and volunteer Ken Rowlands, who recently died.

With only six minutes played, the Lilywhites were awarded a penalty after Macauley Taylor broke the offside, trap took the ball into the box from the left, only for Llangefni goalkeeper Cian Thomas to bring him down.

Jack Higgins stepped up to take, and calmly dispatched the penalty.

Higgins was there again to double Rhyl’s lead just before the break; Taylor used his pace to pass a couple of defenders and found him loose in the middle of the box.

Higgins then fired the ball into the goal, leaving Llangefni goalkeeper Thomas a bystander as the ball sailed past him.

In the second half, the game was stopped for several minutes as Thomas suffered a nasty facial injury following a collision with a teammate, leaving him unable to carry on.

The scoring continued on the hour, and Taylor again was in the thick of the action.

This time, he was the scorer, as captain Reece Fairhurst played a wonderful ball to him, which Taylor caught on the volley and fired in from close range into the roof of the net.

A couple of minutes later, Tom Kemp would put Rhyl four goals ahead, after he found himself the furthest forward as the Lilywhites attacked.

Chris Bennett, out on the right, spotted him running free in on goal, and picked him out with an exquisite ball.

Kemp’s finish was just as special, as he took a touch and fired across Roberts.

Following the game, manager Gareth Thomas praised the clinical display and the work rate of his team, with a special mention for Kemp, who was instrumental in the middle of the pitch and is quickly adapting to life at Rhyl.

Next up for the Lilywhites is a double-header against Llay Welfare, with the first game away on March 4 (kick-off 2pm).
