CPD Y Rhyl 1879 eased past Penmaenmawr Phoenix to reach the final of the North Wales Coast Football Association Intermediate Challenge Cup at the picturesque Cae Sling.

Gareth Thomas’ squad was blighted by injuries and work commitments for another week, with just 14 players to select from.

But this didn’t stop the visitors, as the Lilywhites started on the front foot, controlling much of the play in the early stages, forcing home goalkeeper Dion Jones into a string of fine saves to keep 1879 at bay.

But they finally took the lead with just two minutes of the first half left, when hard-working midfielder Jordan Worthington found the net with a left-footed strike into the bottom-right corner following a sublime pass by veteran centre-back Miles Todd.

The second half continued in a similar vein to the first as the away side remained on the front foot, and young attacker Leon Atkins doubled their lead on 63 minutes, firing into the bottom-right corner following a delightful layoff from fellow forward Tom Cain.

With 77 minutes played, it was then Cain who found the net, this time from the penalty spot following a foul on in-form striker Kieran Ellis.

The ever-composed Cain found the bottom-right corner with a ferocious strike from the spot, taking the game to 3-0.

It was Ellis who deservedly completed the scoring, rising well to head the ball into top-left corner following a pinpoint cross, the game finishing 4-0 and the Lilywhites progressing to the final of the NWCFA intermediate challenge cup.

Thomas added: “Great performance by the lads today, and another final to look forward to.

“The focus now shifts to the league for the next two games.

“We have also added two great additions to the squad with Danny Edwards and Sion Evans joining, this will provide us with some well needed cover after recent injuries within the squad.”

Next up, the Lilywhites will be looking to continue their unbeaten run in the league as they compete in a derby, making the short trip to Kinmel Bay on April 9 in the NWCFA East League Premier Division (kick-off 2.30pm).
