THE range of events attempted by members of Prestatyn Running Club in the past couple of years has been wider than ever, and Mandy Cartwright was another to break new ground last weekend.
In the Scottish Highlands, she competed in the Golspie Backyard Ultra in the picturesque grounds of Dunrobin Castle an unusual event in which contestants begin a 4.2-mile loop on the hour every hour until only one runner is left.
Each undulating loop involves 275 feet of elevation and every runner must start on the hour, and Mandy achieved nine loops – known as “yards” - completing 37.5 miles.
The second fixture in the Borders Road-Running League in Tattenhall on Sunday saw another big turnout from the club, with 12 women and 21 men.
It was the 40th anniversary of the League’s first fixture, which was also at Tattenhall, and the field of 422 was four times that in the first race.
Tony Wood, in great form these days, was again the club’s first finisher and super-vet Emma Collins led the ladies’ team home.
In the top half of the men’s field there was some great packing of red vests, with six finishers within a minute of each other.
Yet another encouraging factor in Sunday’s race was the debut of Eve Manifold, who strengthened the women’s squad.
With four fixtures remaining six veterans remain in line for age-group awards, and the men currently lie sixth in the Improvers’ table.
