A £280,000 project to help Meliden Football Club's expand with womens and junior teams by improving the pitch has been completed.
The North Wales Coast East Premier Division side submitted plans to improve the pitch at The Mine to ensure it could cope with the additional games being played. The works included improving the drainage and investing in pitch care equipment to ensure it is kept in good shape over time.
Money was raised via grants from the Cymru football foundation, Gwynt Y Mor community fund, Sports Wales and North Hoyley windfarm.
The goal now is to launch a women's team plus three or four mixed junior teams, run in conjunction with Meliden Primary School.
The school will also use the pitch for some school games.
Meliden chairman Tom Fletcher said that bringing such an investment to his home village was important to him.
"Our pitch is located right in the middle of Meliden's council estate," he said. "The community struggles with sports facilities in our area as it is. We aren't alone in that, however we have one open space in the village - The Mine.
"Now we have delivered this project, it's no longer going to hold the wider community back in getting involved in sporting activities. According to Welsh Index of Multiple Deprivation Meliden is in the top half of most deprived areas in Wales.
"In terms of income it's within the most deprived 20-30%. We also sits next to two other areas that are similarly rated - Prestatyn South-West and Dyserth and as a club we can now provide activities for people from within those areas."
