THE snow and ice, which at one stage threatened to wipe out the weekend’s racing calendar, cleared rapidly to enable an almost full programme to go ahead.

And, in fact, conditions were so good that several members of Prestatyn Running Club chalked up personal bests.

The North Wales team which travelled to Loughborough for the UKAC inter-counties cross-country championships was severely under-strength, with incomplete teams in most of the age-groups.

Wearing the green and orange vest with pride was club captain Lisa Lines, who showed her willingness to take on the cream of British athletes.

Lisa came in a commendable 211st, clocking 40.24, with Prestatyn’s second-claim member Amie Smith (Cheshire Dragons) 120th in 37.38.

Only one other senior lady made the trip to represent the region.

The other major event of the weekend was Sunday (March 12)’s Chester 10k, another high-quality competition which attracts athletes from all corners of the country.

Eight Prestatyn members took part, with Julie Evans claiming a PB 24 hours after doing the Nova parkrun.

Roger Harrison-Jones was fourth over-80 and first over-85, but unfortunately there was no award in that category.

Not having raced since November, Gordon Jones, who is approaching his 65th birthday, made his comeback in the Conwy parkrun.

He finished seventh overall in 19.28, just 20 seconds outside his best time for the course, which is the second-fastest for the age-group.

Other placings were: 76 Ann-Claire Jones 26.40, 99 Grahame Shone 28.36, 102 Helen Alefounder 28.46.

Stephen Brown again competed in the Torvean parkrun in Inverness and for the third consecutive week set a PB, this time finishing 66th in 26.58.

Meanwhile, the fourth Borders Road-Running League fixture of the season, which had been scheduled for next Sunday (March 19) has now been called off.

It is now possible that the next race will be in Delamere on April 2.
