AFTER a couple of weeks of relatively little activity, the contrast could hardly have been greater for Prestatyn Running Club last weekend.

Courses ranged from a motor-racing circuit to a steep ladder-like climb in the Conwy Valley, and the participants included some of the club’s youngest and oldest members.

Among the most impressive performances was from junior member Tia Calland who, for the third time in consecutive races, set a new PB in the Prestatyn promenade junior parkrun.

It came just 24 hours after her mother Rachel had also set a PB at the same venue.

In-form Alex Ryder deserves great credit for continually pitting himself against some of the best athletes from the North-West of England and acquitting himself well each time.

On Sunday (March 5), he lined up in the Trafford 10k and clocked 35.02, and though it was just outside his best, he had good cause to be pleased.

Meanwhile, supervet Philip Jones bowed to pressure from his sons and turned out in the Oulton Park 5k on the undulating race circuit.

The oldest competitor in the field, he finished in 40.42.

Elsewhere, four of the club’s women took on the Pipedream challenge in Dolgarrog, a short up-and-down fell-race which includes the notorious climb up the steps alongside the giant pipes.

The four Prestatyn members were Sophie Johnson, Mandy Cartwright, Ann-Claire Jones and Helen Alefounder.

Undaunted, Ann-Claire and Helen than travelled to Coniston in the Lake District for Sunday’s Kong  Mini Mountain Marathon, the first of three four-hour races in a series.

The 16k course included 1,100 metres of ascent and the Prestatyn pair finished in 3-58.07.

In total, 15 club members turned out in the Nova parkrun, and three were in action at other venues.

They included the talented Jenna Bagnall, who ran in Trentham Gardens, and who has been concentrating on her college studies for the past couple of years.
