THOUGH she had been unwell, Prestatyn Running Club's Ann-Claire Jones competed in the Bangor half-marathon on Sunday (October 23), the third event in Run Wales’ Four Castles Series in aid of St David’s Hospice.

In the circumstances she was satisfied with her time of 2-12.51, 45th female and 148th overall.

At the same venue, Alan Jones took part in the 10k, clocking 56.36 in 89th place.

Meanwhile, injuries, unavailability and a long journey to Newtown meant that Prestatyn Running Club’s men’s and women’s teams were below-strength for the second fixture of the David Alun Williams North Wales Cross-Country League on Saturday (October 22).

A noticeable feature of the senior men’s team was that the first four finishers were new to the league this season.

Tom Carter had a superb run, finishing eighth overall, while the second counter, Jack Strong, is a new recruit.

The men finished seventh on the day but are fifth on aggregate, while the women lie seventh after coming 12th.

Martin Cortvriend was second in the M70 class and the over-65s retained second place behind Shropshire Shufflers.

Results: Senior men: 8 Tom Carter 27.45 (2nd M40), 90 Jack Strong 34.13, 99 Dan Liddle 35.14, 131 Reg Jonas 40.28, 137 Steve Brown 42.09, 138 James Brown 42.09, 142 Nem James 51.05.

M70: 2 Martin Cortvriend 22.37, 4 George Nixon 25.42, 5 Grahame Shone 27.45. M85: 1 Roger Harrison-Jones 31.47.

Ladies: 59 Helen Ashworth 24.07, 86 Sophie Johnson 26.41, 94 Mandy Cartwright 28.06, 98 Liz Martin 28.41, 100 Nicki Triggs 28.51, 109 Julia Evans 31.55, 115 Emma Birchall 33.52, 115 Julie Evans 34.52.

The third fixture, on November 26, will be hosted by Prestatyn Running Club on a new course in Whitford, and volunteers are needed to assist on the day.

Credit is also due to two of the club’s juniors and their parents for making the two-hour trip to Newtown for the second Junior League fixture.

In the under-11 girls’ race, Freya Valerio was 8th in 4.43 and Olivia Standring-Jones 14th in 5.20.

Only two members turned out in parkruns at the weekend, both at Greenfield Valley. Luke Bodman finished third overall in 22.11 and Debbie Jones was 27th in 30.39.

The results of the previous week’s Borders League race in New Brighton, when they were finally sorted out, made good reading for the club, with the men finishing second and the women third, both in Division 2.

The recruitment of second-claim members also meant that the women topped the Improvers’ table.

Those who gained top-three placings in their age-groups were: Darren Blazier (2nd M50), Martin Cortvriend (1st M70), George Nixon (3rd M70_, Gareth Hughes (1st M75), Mike Davis (2nd M75), Amie Smith (3rd Senior lady) and Emma Collins (1st L60).
