A TRIO of Prestatyn Running Club members have been selected for further international honours.

Steve Skates (M40), Martin Cortvriend (M70) and Gareth Hughes (M75) have been included in the Welsh Masters’ squad for the British and Irish Masters’ cross-country international at Santry Park, Dublin, on November 12.

All three have represented Wales in the past and Martin and Steve, in particular, have been in tremendous form recently.

Since turning 70 earlier this year Martin has set numerous Parkrun records and won three North Wales titles on the road, while Steve had a particularly impressive outing in last week’s North Wales League fixture in Bangor.

The weather in North Wales has turned decidedly chilly during the past week, but three of the club’s ladies struggled in temperatures of 30 degrees on Sunday.

Julie and Suzanne Evans, and Helen Baxandall were in Majorca and entered the Palma 10k.

Because of issues with the Port Authority, the course was reduced to 9k but the heat still caused problems.

Helen finished in about an hour, with Julie clocking 67.09 and Suzanne 73.22.

Off-road captain Steve Brown was the sole representative in the popular Breidden Hills fell-race in Shropshire.

The 7.2-mile race involves 2,690 feet of ascent, and Steve finished 75th overall in 1-43.50.

Much-travelled Steve and Debbie Weedman received a round of applause for chalking up their 100th parkrun outing at the Nova on Saturday.

It was yet another Prestatyn Steve – Stocker – who grabbed the honours by winning the event.

The placings were: 1 Steve Stocker 19.44, 5 Oliver Birch-Jones 20.57, 10 Steve Weedman 22.54, 14 Steve Haimes 23.27, 19 Andy Clark 24.06, 21 Martin Gill 24.40, 31 Sophie Johnson 25.20, 33 Mandy Cartwright 27.27 (pb), 36 Grahame Shone 28.02, 42 Mike Davis 29.13, 43 Gareth Hughes 29.15, 47 Debbie Weedman 29.51, 52 Linda Friar 30.45, 57 Emma Birchall 31.36, 58 Nem James 32.32.

Other parkrun results: Greenfield Valley: 3 Martin Cortvriend 22.35 (1st M70), 28 Steve Hatfield 32.18. Shrewsbury: 153 Andrew Scott 25.36. Holyrood (Edinburgh): 247 Sue Hughes 32.01 (2nd L60).

Meanwhile, next Sunday (October 16) sees the opening fixture of the Borders Road-Running League on the seafront in New Brighton, and the club’s prospects look brighter than for some time.
