THE roof of a bus shelter in Dyserth cannot be replaced imminently due to “current budget pressures” faced by Denbighshire County Council.
Located by the crossroads by Cwm Road and Waterfall Road, the shelter’s roof was replaced earlier this year due to being unsafe.
But Cllr David Williams, who represents the Dyserth ward on Denbighshire County Council, said issues about the roof were first highlighted in 2022.
It is understood that the council has been quoted roughly £4,770 to replace the roof – a figure which Cllr Williams said is “way over what it should be”.
He said: “If they had listened to our concerns two years ago when the roof was first reported unsafe, they could have taken it off then, and the funds would probably have been there (to replace it), because we probably wouldn’t have been in the financial mess we are in now.
“By the time the council were reminded about it this summer, they took the roof off, and we then found out they haven’t got the funds to replace it.
“I’ve had quite a few complaints from residents about it. People are just incredulous. For £4,770 quote to be deemed the best-value quote is just laughable.”
Cllr Williams believes that the work could be carried out to replace the roof for “considerably less” than that which the council has been quoted.
He acknowledged that numerous health and safety procedures must be adhered to in replacing it, but as it is, he said, residents have been left with “a bus shelter without a roof”.
In response to Cllr Williams’ comments, a council spokesperson said: “The bus shelter in question was reported as having an unstable roof.
“A contractor found a large amount of foliage covering the roof which needed to be removed before we could establish the state of the roof underneath.
“Once this work was completed, the roof was then deemed to be in a dangerous state and beyond economic repair.
“Action was then taken to remove it as soon as possible for health and safety reasons.
“The preliminary quotation to replace the roof was provided by our building and maintenance team who use a framework for suppliers.
“Due to current budget pressures this financial year, the task of replacing the roof will not go ahead at this moment in time.
“However, this task is due to be revisited in the next financial year, dependent on other work needed across county shelters.”
