A warning has been issued about a winter fuel payment scam in Denbighshire.

Sam Rowlands, Member of the Welsh Parliament for North Wales, has urged constituents not to be fooled by scam texts.

Mr Rowlands has joined Denbighshire County Council in alerting residents about a scam targeting the vulnerable and elderly.

He said: "These days more than ever we all have to be on the lookout for despicable scammers who prey on the vulnerable and the elderly.

"Unfortunately there are unscrupulous people out there and Denbighshire council is now warning residents to be especially aware of text message scams.

"With the UK Labour Government scrapping the winter fuel payment for many pensioners, it is sad but true that some people might well be taken in by a fraudulent text.

"I would urge anyone not to be fooled if they receive a message claiming to be from the council offering winter fuel payments."

Denbighshire County Council has been made aware of a scam circulating the county where residents receive texts about potential winter fuel payments.

The recipients of these texts are informed that they are entitled to winter fuel payments and are invited to provide more information by clicking a fraudulent link.

Denbighshire County Council has reminded residents to think twice before responding to any suspicious text messages from unknown numbers and to report any suspicious contact from unknown numbers.

Mr Rowlands added: "Please take care not to be scammed and remember that if you do receive an offer which appears to be too good to be true then it probably is."
