THE manager of a One Stop shop in Rhyl has expressed his disappointment that the rubbish bin outside the store will no longer be emptied at weekends.

Nathan Whiteside is in charge of the shop, on Cefndy Road, and said the decision by Denbighshire County Council is “unfair” on his staff.

He said the council informed him of the change last weekend, and urged the local authority to reverse its decision.

Staff members have been tidying up the rubbish left by the bin on a daily basis, he added.

Nathan said: “It’s poor from the council. We’re extremely disappointed.

“My personal opinion is this is one of the negative impacts from the new (Trolibocs) bin system (which was introduced in Denbighshire on June 3).

“Something which was meant to better the environment has had a huge negative impact upon our local community and the ones surrounding.

“It’s also unfair to our staff to clear up the mess left by fly-tippers, but we’re unwilling to let the community become overcrowded with litter.

“People often leave carrier bags of full rubbish near the bin, not inside it. Seagulls then pull the bags apart, causing even more mess, so the blame isn’t entirely on the council.”

The changes to recycling and waste collections implemented by the council included new containers and weekly collections for recyclable materials, and the scrapping of the blue wheelie bin.

Since then, some residents have been required to separate their “dry” recycling using a new three-tier “Trolibocs”.

But the council, which has previously claimed the new scheme would save it £400-500K per year, has issued multiple apologies for residents not having their bins collected on time since the new system began.

In response to Nathan’s comments, a council spokesperson said: “The issue identified has been cleared by council crews this morning (November 11), in line with the current collection schedule.

“The Streetscene team are currently reviewing the working practices and scheduling of street clearance activities in line with the upcoming festive period.

“We would like to remind residents to not place rubbish around the bin. If a bin is full, please use a nearby one instead.”
