THE position of headteacher at Rhyl High School has been advertised for a second time this year.

The vacancy was previously posted in May and June after former head Claire Armitstead confirmed she would leave at the end of the 2023-24 academic year to become a director of Association of School and College Leaders.

Interviews were scheduled to take place at the end of June, but the position was not filled, and Ceri Ellis remains the school’s acting headteacher.

Now, Rhyl High has shared the vacancy again, with applications welcome until November 18, and interviews due to be held on December 4 and 5.

Mike Harris, the school’s chair of governors, said: “The governing body at Rhyl High School are currently recruiting for a new headteacher.

“More information about this can be found on the Denbighshire County Council website.

“We are grateful to Ms Ceri Ellis for continuing as the acting headteacher during this recruitment process.

“We look forward to receiving applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals who wish to make a difference in our community through the leadership of Rhyl High School.”

Mr Harris was asked by the Journal why the position was not filled following the job being advertised in the summer, but not disclose the reason for this.

According to the information pack attached to the job advertisement, the school’s new headteacher’s start date is “dependent on notice periods”.

Mrs Armitstead left Rhyl High after being its headteacher for 14-and-a-half years, having overseen it coming out of special measures, relocating to a new building, and drastically increasing its number of pupils.

In its latest Estyn report, in 2022, Rhyl High was praised for ensuring the wellbeing of staff and pupils is of "highest priority" and the school’s curriculum offer was noted to be a "particular strength".
