AN “IMMERSIVE scare maze experience” came to Gwrych Castle in Abergele for the first time last night (October 18).
Escape Records have returned to take over the castle until November 2 to host their Escape Alive event again, which is full of “terrifying Halloween scares”.
The Journal attended the opening night of this year’s “after dark” event, with the scare maze proving to be a thrilling yet terrifying assault on the senses.
In groups of about eight or nine, you’ll traipse through pitch darkness and billowing clouds of smoke, meeting some particularly eerie individuals along the way.
You’ll also witness a resurrection take place, and hear delightful chanting of “Don’t get left behind, otherwise we’ll chop off your legs”.
Those who are particularly tall should also beware – at one point, you’ll find the ceiling quite literally closing in on you.
What’s more, not every member of your original group will make it out together – even if you make it out at all, that is.
As well as the brilliant scare maze, which last approximately 30 minutes, thrill-seekers can try their hand at pumpkin carving or put themselves in the stocks.
There’s also a outdoor film area set up, with last night’s screenings including Hocus Pocus, Beetlejuice and The Addams Family.
You can also tuck into wood-fired pizzas, burgers and loaded fries, and hot drinks, while a bar area serves a wide selection of alcohol beverages and soft drinks.
The event also has its own photobooth set up, while you can try your hand at games like the “pirate blaster” or “ball in a bucket”.
A hugely successful debut event last year attracted more than 12,000 visitors to the castle.
This year’s event will also involve special party nights, including a collaboration between Escape Records and Cue Presents on October 26, and a “Day of the Dead” celebration on November 2.
Each day, two types of sessions will be run: Twilight (for families), and After Dark (12+).
5-6.30pm: Twilight Sessions (family friendly, children must be older than five, under-18s must be accompanied by an adult).
6.30-9.30pm: After Dark Sessions (12+, under-18s must be accompanied by an adult).
Laura Myatt, from the Escape Records team, said: “After such a successful first event last year, we are so happy to be expanding Escape Alive and bringing it to both North and South Wales.
“We have such exciting plans to scale the event and make it bigger and better each year.”
