A NEW curry house priding itself on being “the first Sri Lankan and South Indian restaurant in Rhyl” has opened in the town.

Thisha Curry House has launched at 31 Wellington Road (formerly Fuller Monty café) and is run by Devendrarajah Manivannan, along with his wife Anushiya and son Shavi.

Both Devendrarajah and Anushiya formerly worked at Belmont House nursing home; him as deputy manager, and her as a cook.

Their restaurant serves a variety of kothu, parotta, puri and dosa dishes, as well as numerous vegetarian options, English breakfasts, and more.

Devendrarajah, who hails from Sri Lanka and now lives in Rhyl, said: “My wife is a very good cook, and there are a lot people here of South Asian background, so we just thought: ‘Why don’t we open a shop here?’

“We worked very hard to get this shop. We had to do a complete renovation of the place; it took nearly four months before we were finally finished.

“Business has not been bad so far, and is getting better now. The first week was at the end of the holiday period, so was very, very busy.”

Thisha Curry House offers both eat-in and take-out services, and is open seven days a week from 9am until 10pm.

“There are a lot of Indian restaurants around here, but they’re all based on North Indian-style food; whereas ours is South Indian and Sri Lankan, which is totally different.

“People who’ve come here seem to love the food, and recognise that difference. There are more herbs and spices, and it’s proper home-made food.

“The puri, chicken biryani, parotta, and masala dosa have been the most popular so far.

“I feel so happy and proud that we could introduce our food to the community. You can’t find puri anywhere else in Denbighshire!”
