A GROUP of Meliden residents have written to Denbighshire County Council calling for action to address the “inappropriate” and “dangerous” parking on double yellow lines in the village.
Minesh Shah, chairman of the Meliden Residents’ Action Group (MRAG), says this has been a problem for several months, and told the council in the letter that it is “incumbent” upon the local authority to deal with it.
Dr Shah said that, at a meeting of the group in July, two community support officers from North Wales Police were in attendance and were asked about this.
But he said they responded by saying they were unable to do anything, because this “responsibility lies with the traffic wardens employed by the town or county council”.
In the letter to the council, Dr Shah highlighted concerns in three main locations on behalf of the group:
- Cars being parked on the double yellow lines near the junction the junction of The Grove and A457.
- Parking on the double yellow lines on Ffordd Talargoch – “making it at times impossible for buses to get past, causing considerable inconvenience to passengers and the bus drivers with subsequent delays”.
- Parking on the pavement parking opposite The Meadows and parking on Ffordd Penrhwylfa near the football pitch – “this forces pedestrians onto the road to get past the parked cars; you will appreciate it is especially undesirable when mothers with prams and babies are forced onto the roads”.
Concerns have also been expressed, he said, that cars are “often parked at bus stops” in Meliden.
Dr Shah added: “It is incumbent upon the council to deal with this, and we therefore request that the council addresses this illegal and dangerous parking on double yellow lines immediately, before there is a serious accident resulting in significant injury or loss of life.”
He also offered to provide the council with photographs which illustrate the aforementioned issues.
In response, a spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: “We thank the resident group for bringing this issue it to our attention.
“We are happy to take them up on their offer of supplying photographs and also some times of when the particular problems are, as this can help enforcement to be undertaken more efficiently.
“We will also ask our parking enforcement team to increase patrols in Meliden.”
North Wales Police was also approached for comment.
