COASTAL defence works along Rhyl’s seafront are due to be completed by next summer, with the town’s new promenade set to be “ready for public use” by the autumn of 2025.

The Central Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme, along with a similar project in Prestatyn, are jointly worth £97million, and are designed to protect more than 2,000 properties from potential floods and coastal erosion for the next 100 years.

In Rhyl, all available revetment step units have now been placed, with the outstanding units to be placed according to the construction phasing of a new ramp, which is due to be completed by next spring.

The preparatory works for Rhyl’s new promenade have now started, with the first precast concrete rear wave wall units scheduled to be placed towards the end of September.

The work on the promenade will continue through the winter months and into next summer.

Work on the eastern section, from Splash Point to Rhyl Events Arena, is now complete.

A Denbighshire County Council spokesperson said: “The project team is diligently working to ensure that the new promenade is ready for public use by autumn 2025.”

It is estimated that approximately 550 residential and 45 non-residential properties in Rhyl – including key seafront landmarks, businesses and homes – will be protected thanks to this work.

Both the Rhyl and Prestatyn schemes are funded by Welsh Government and Denbighshire County Council, with the work being carried out by Balfour Beatty.

Meanwhile, public information sessions will be held at Rhyl Youth Centre on September 30 and October 1 (1-7pm), where proposed designs for the town’s new Drift Park play area will be presented.

The old Drift Park was demolished in March 2023 as part of the coastal works, but a new park will be reinstated at the end of the scheme.

A council spokesperson added: “We invite local residents and businesses to share their views and suggestions on the design.

“If you are unable to attend either session, an online enquiry form will be available at www.denbighshire.gov.uk/rhyl-drift-park.

“This form can be completed from September 30 until October 11.”
