A TRAVELLER family has been given temporary accommodation at a council-owned site in Prestatyn, believed to be the site of an old school.

The site is believed to be the council homes built at the old Bodnant Primary School land on Marine Road, which was demolished in 2018.

The school's demolition made way for the first council homes to be built in Denbighshire in more than 25 years.

Residents reported traveller activity at the site, with the council saying it had a "legal duty" to house the Travellers in accordance with the Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Needs Assessment.

It confirmed a family were being provided facilities at the vacant site, and that this was a "temporary measure" until a permanent solution could be found.

A Denbighshire County Council spokesperson said: “Denbighshire County Council, alongside all councils in Wales, has a legal duty to provide residential site pitches in accordance with a statutory Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Needs Assessment approved by Welsh Government.

"As a temporary measure, the council has in accordance with current legislation and guidance provided facilities to a family on a council owned site which is currently vacant.

"This is a temporary measure, whilst we identify a more suitable permanent solution for this family."
