Rhyl may be getting a little festive cheer with plans for a Christmas market in 2025

Widnes-based Kevin Gurney, owner of Twilight Touring Events company, wants to instil a bit of festive charm into a town he’s described having a strong "emotional attachment" to.

Mr Gurney has said he wants to help stop Rhyl from "going downhill."

At 53, Mr Gurney is coordinating with Rhyl-based councillors and Denbighshire Leisure Ltd about the feasibility of a Christmas market at the town’s Events Arena.

However, the latest plan is now to hold the event in 2025 rather than rushing an event this winter.

We asked local readers about their thoughts on the idea, and what they hope it could bring to the town.

Linda Colegate, shared her thoughts saying: "Great but why not have a weekly market the one they have in Mold on a Wednesday and Saturday are fantastic and all the shops are hectic."

David Fairbrother agreed stating: "We need a market all year round not just for Christmas."

Zoe Price echoed the points but added her own thoughts commenting: "Great if they give local traders first dibs for stalls and don't book some travelling German Market that will just set up, take money away from the area then leave.

"There are loads of local traders that need a place to set up and this would be a great opportunity.

"Same with local food vendors."

The potential impact of weather conditions was brought up by Gavin Tunnicliff, who noted: "The weather will be a major factor in this, it would take a brave person in the depths of winter to organise a market on a seafront."

Angie Thompson vouched for the idea to be expanded, saying: "Fantastic idea it needs to be utilised.

"They could extend it down the high street and bring people in, maybe longer than a weekend.

"Open the rides on the children’s village make it into something big."

Concerning the wider implications and planning, Stella Witherspoon shared her thoughts: "Sounds good in theory.

"Council just needs to check all other Christmas markets at the same time.

"Bodnant Food has an artisan market/ Christmas stalls end of November and someone mentioned Prestatyn has this event although I've never known about it!

"If it is to happen in Rhyl needs advertising well, or another flop is inevitable."

Several people like Catherine Leary, expressed collective approval and hope for the potential market: "Yes, yes especially after Llandudno has cancelled their Christmas Market Extravaganza."

Stephen Rastin noted potential obstructions, mentioning: "I'm 100% behind the idea, but is it feasible if the demolition work on the Sea Life Centre is underway?"

Marguerite Larder seemed enthusiastic about the idea saying: "Fantastic idea, fingers crossed."
