A COUPLE from Rhyl who ran a bed and breakfast in the town together for more than two decades are celebrating 65 years of marriage this month.

Tom and Maureen Lawrence’s blue sapphire wedding anniversary falls on September 19, but they celebrated it early with a family gathering in Burton-on-Trent last weekend.

Both Tom and Maureen turned 85 in July, as well, which they celebrated with a cruise around Spain and Portugal.

The couple ran Beechroyde B&B on Palace Avenue together, while Tom also worked as a builder.

They met when Tom worked for Maureen’s father’s painting and decorating company as a teenager, before marrying when they were both 20, and later having three children; Rachel, Andrew and Kerry.

Kerry said: “We had a nice afternoon for our mum and dad, celebrating an early blue sapphire wedding anniversary with their family.

“I’m not sure which of them deserves a medal the most!

“We hope they enjoyed their little trip away to Burton-on-Trent.

“Dad worked for my mum’s dad, who ran a painting and decorating company. He met mum through that, asked her out when they were both 17, and they got married at 20.

“My mum’s very quiet but very clever, and takes a lot in, and my dad’s very outgoing, and much more chatty. Most people know him in Rhyl because he worked for a lot of firms in the town as a builder.”

Both of them hail from the Midlands; Tom from the town of Cradley Heath, and Maureen from Blackheath, which is where they wed in 1959.
