A WOMAN who works as a district nurse in Abergele is to walk 30 miles throughout the month of September to raise funds for a cause close to her heart.

Rachel Crick, 39, from Trelogan, is taking on the challenge in aid of Dementia UK, a “lovely” charity who she “just wanted to give something back” to.

She is the carer for her mother, Wendy, who has been diagnosed with vascular dementia, and both she and Wendy previously cared for her grandmother, Eileen, who had dementia, prior to her death in 2008.

Already, Rachel has more than doubled her initial fundraising target of £150 -  www.facebook.com/donate/1237343910963058/1249653199732129.

Rachel said: “Dementia is very close to my heart, so I just wanted to give something back to the charity. I just think it’s lovely what they do for families.

“I have nursed a lot of patients with this cruel disease, and this charity is incredible. It helps so many families like mine, and people who are living with this disease.”

So far in September, Rachel has completed walks of Moel Famau and Penhryn Castle – her minimum distance is one mile a day.

She has logged three miles so far, and plans on walking up Eryri later this month, too.

Rachel added: “My mum’s mobility is quite poor, but she’s going to do a few walks with me.

“Some people with dementia can feel so isolated and alone, but it’s scary for their families, as well. You’re almost grieving already for a person who’s still there.

“I’ve been loving down the walking. It’s just nice knowing you’re doing it for a good cause. It gives you that bit of determination.

“It (£150) was not a massive target, but it’s something. It’s the first thing I’ve ever done on my own for charity.”
