THE opening of a new “drop-in” tea and coffee room at a shopping centre in Rhyl was marked by a “family fun day” last weekend.

The coffee room, called Lighthouse, is based within the Ahava Community charity shop in the White Rose Centre, and opened for the first time on Saturday, August 31.

There was face-painting, a craft stall, children’s games, a name the teddy competition, a raffle and lucky dip, and food for people to enjoy, with funds raised from the event donated to Bearjamin the Fundraising Bear (Richard Kendrick).

Lighthouse is a “drop-in safe zone”, which will soon also be used during the week as a hub for help and advice to help those in need.

Tom McDonald, manager of Ahava’s Rhyl store, said: “I am pleased to see the new community hub up and running for those in need in Rhyl and surrounding areas, a place where help and advice and support will be given to everyone.

“The fun day was amazing - thank you to everyone who supported the day, and to the volunteers and staff for all their continued help every day.”

Ahava Community opened its store in Rhyl in March, at the unit of the shopping centre formerly occupied by New Look and a “pop-up” Halloween and Christmas shop.

It is an organisation which works towards ending homelessness and supporting individuals in crisis throughout the year.

Its Rhyl shop is open from 10am-4pm, Monday to Friday.
