A FIRE which took place outside the Morrisons supermarket in Rhyl yesterday (August 29) is being treated as an arson attack.

At about 5.45pm yesterday, a witness said that shoppers at the supermarket, on Marsh Road, were told to evacuate the premises.

It is understood that a homeless person’s tent was set on fire.

A witness said: “There was an announcement in Morrisons for everyone to evacuate due to a fire at the side of the building.

“Once outside, everyone was ushered away from the building. A guy walked past and said: ‘there goes my bed tonight’.

“I asked what had happened, and he said that some people had set his tent on fire.”

North Wales Police confirmed that the force and the fire service are investigating the matter.

A police spokesperson said:  “We were called at 5.46pm yesterday afternoon to reports of a fire at the exterior of Morrisons store on Marsh Road, Rhyl.

“Officers attended and the incident is being treated as arson. Our investigation with colleagues from North Wales Fire and Rescue Service is currently ongoing.”

North Wales Fire and Rescue Service and Morrisons have been contacted for further comment.
