A MAN from Rhyl has published his first set of short stories, set in the town and elsewhere on the North Wales coast.

Dave Mickleburgh’s “Drowned Lands: Despair and Horror on the Coast” was published on Monday (August 5).

It is a set of seven short stories dealing with “horror at the seaside”, but also covering loneliness, despair, anxiety and Welsh mythology.

Dave is a RAF veteran and is semi-retired, spending the last 12 months writing his stories.

He often writes in coffee shops in the area, supporting small businesses and making many observations about life in a seaside town as he does.

The synopsis for the book reads: “The holiday resorts of Britain were long held to be places of fun and happiness.

“Places where families came to laugh and play, relationships were made or cemented and days were long and sunny.

“They're not like that at all. The paint is thin and the lights can flicker and dim.

“Families fight, relationships end and between winter and night, the sun doesn't shine for the majority of the time, not even close.

“The mind can heal when rested by the sea, but that which lies beneath the waves has been drowned for millennia and is not quiet or restful. It is hateful and resentful.

“And the sand, the sand gets everywhere.”
