HUGE crowds gathered despite the overcast weather to enjoy Prestatyn Carnival today (July 20).

Based on Bastion Road Field, the carnival opened at 11am, while its usual parade set off from the top of High Street at 12pm.

First held in 1921, the carnival provides a colourful spectacle as it winds its way down Prestatyn’s High Street and through the town centre to the carnival field on Bastion Road.

The parade travelled down High Street, before turning left into Bridge Road, making its way over the railway bridge, and lastly turning into Bastion Road.

A competition was also held for the parade’s best entry, with former Prestatyn and Meliden mayor, Cllr Bob Murray, having decided that this year’s theme will be “the magic of musicals”.

The winner received a £250 prize, while the runner-up was handed £100.

There were also competitions for best fancy dress, business, and non-profit group entries in the parade.

The children who led the parade have each been chosen as individual members of the Prestatyn Carnival Royal Family.

To help with the cost of living crisis, Prestatyn Carnival Association made contributions to the cost of the dresses/outfits.

Meanwhile, events on the carnival field following the conclusion of the parade included fun with Carrots the Clown, Prestatyn Baby of the Year Competition, and music from Rhyl Silver Band and Dimensions.

There was also the coronation of the 2024 Prestatyn Carnival Royal Family, as well as performances from Co. Creative Performance Company and Ysgol Bodnant’s Samba Drummers, both of whom also took part in the parade.

Dog shows started at the North Clwyd Animal Rescue stand at 2.30pm, while there were also land train rides, tombolas, fun fair rides, bouncy castles and more for people to enjoy.
