A PUB and restaurant in Rhyl whose staff are at risk of redundancies is now to only serve guests staying at the adjacent Premier Inn hotel.

The Submariner Cookhouse and Pub, on West Parade, underwent a period of "consultation" last month, but remains open and trading nonetheless.

This follows Whitbread PLC, the company responsible for the pub, revealing in April its plans to cut its workforce by approximately 1,500.

But in a notice to customers, seen by the Journal, the company said that, as of July 5, it would no longer serve members of the public who were not guests at the Premier Inn hotel.

The notice said: "We are writing to let you know that we’ve announced plans to make changes at some of our restaurants.

"Unfortunately, The Submariner Cookhouse and Pub in Rhyl will be changing to a Premier Inn restaurant and will only service those staying in the hotel after July 5.

"We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause."

Whitbread PLC has been contacted for further comment.

Last month, a Whitbread spokesperson said: “Whilst we have announced proposals which could impact the site, it is important to note they are subject to consultation.

“We recognise that this will be unsettling for our team members, and we are providing them with dedicated support."

In April, Whitbread revealed a 13 per cent increase in sales for the last financial year, a well as a 36 per cent growth in adjusted profit before tax to £561million.

It added: “Over the next 24 months, we are planning to exit 126 branded restaurants; they will continue to operate as they do now so that they can be sold as going concerns.

“Of these restaurants, we have agreed to sell 21 for £28m. In 2023-24, these restaurants on aggregate generated revenue of £147m and a pre-tax loss of £9m."
