A WOMAN was saved by her neighbours after her husband strangled her, a court heard.

Jayesh Joy, of Kinard Drive in Rhyl, appeared for sentence at Mold Crown Court on Monday.

The 40-year-old had previously admitted one offence of intentional strangulation.

Prosecutor Karl Scholz told the court the victim in the case is Joy's wife, Ligi George.

On June 10 this year, the defendant had returned to the home they shared - and he was "clearly intoxicated."

An argument ensued and Joy pushed the victim into the hallway, before grabbing her by the neck.

Mr Scholz said while the incident was short-lived, it was nevertheless distressing.

Two witnesses, the victim's neighbours, saw what was happening as the property's front door was open.

When interviewed, he made no comment.

Mr Scholz told the court the victim was anxious that the case should not proceed to sentence and despite the reviewing lawyer being asked to confirm whether the prosecution was in the public interest, the decision had been taken that the case would proceed.

Sarah Badrawy, defending, told the court: "The letter from Ms George is supportive of the defendant and continuing the relationship with him.

"Mr Joy indicated his willingness to continue the relationship too but there's clearly work to do.

"It appears to be acknowledged by all that a return to India would be the most constructive option for him.

"He has a good jot to return to there and a supportive family network.

"Mr Joy wishes to serve his sentence and put this behind him."

Judge Nicola Saffman handed down a 14 month custodial term, to be served immediately.
