GILL German has been elected the Labour MP for the new Clwyd North constituency.
Ms German, a former teacher who has also served as deputy leader and cabinet member for education, children and families for Denbighshire County Council, won 14,794 votes, beating Conservative candidate Darren Millar by a margin of 1,196.
She said: "This is the most incredible honour, to be elected the very first MP for Clwyd North.
"If you voted Labour for the first time today, thank you for putting your trust in me, and thank you for voting for the change we need. I will work as hard as I possibly can to deliver it.
"I am proud of our positive campaign based on our plan for a better future with Labour, and what I offer in this role.
"For every child and every family I have had the honour to work with, thank you."
Mr Millar said following the result: "A particular thanks to those thousands of constituents across Clwyd North who put their faith in me by voting for me yesterday in the election.
"Of course, it's a disappointing result for us here, and we have work to do to rebuild trust in the Conservative Party in the coming years.
"I want to congratulate Gill on her election. I look forward to being able to work with you for the benefit of the people across your constituency in the years ahead.
