THE recycling and waste park in Rhyl has had to close today (June 27) following a fire last night, which is currently being investigated by the police.

Rhyl’s recycling centre, based on Marsh Road, was the subject of a fire at approximately 5.30pm yesterday afternoon.

Dyserth residents have ‘never had a collection’ under new waste system

Residents will not be able to make bookings, while existing bookings at the centre have had to be cancelled for today and tomorrow.

Alternative appointments are available at the recycling and waste park in Denbigh, and at Abergele’s recycling centre.

Denbighshire County Council apologised for the inconvenience caused.

North Wales Police and North Wales Fire and Rescue Service have been approached for further comment.

A witness said: "I had just got back to the yard over the road and saw the black smoke. I had a look up and down to see if I could see anyone on site but there was no-one.

"A few minutes later, a man appeared, who I think works on the site and he said that it had only been locked up since 5pm.

"I'd called the fire service by this point, and the police were here within minutes, and then the fire service turned up not long after.

"I don't know what it was that set on fire, but I'm assuming it was just down to the heat.

"I'd left after half an hour, but they were tackling it for a while."
