A GROUP of friends complete the National Three Peaks Challenge last week, raising more than £9,000 in the process for a young girl from Rhyl fighting a rare form of liver cancer.

Jasmine Lee, eight, has undergone liver resection surgery, and is doing “absolutely amazing”, according to family friend, Nia Hughes.

Nia, from Prestatyn, was one of eight who completed the walks up Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa on June 22, in a time of 23 hours, 10 minutes and 44 seconds.

The money they have raised will be given to help Jasmine to complete her own “bucket list”, and to support charities close to Jasmine’s and her family’s hearts.

“We have already donated a contribution to Ysbyty Glan Clwyd’s paediatric oncology rooms, and a voucher for the play area and toys to Birmingham Children’s Hospital, where Jasmine had her surgery,” Nia said.

“Ben Nevis was not a mountain to mess with – we started in just T-shirts but quickly put on waterproofs, and then reached the summit in hats, gloves and scarves.

“Yr Wyddfa was dark, rainy, windy and covered in mist; in such conditions, we would have usually turned back, but in this case, it wasn’t an option as part of our 24-hour challenge.”

Nia added: “The weather was quite dangerous and some of the group suffered from fatigue, hallucinations, bad knees, dehydration, blisters, cold conditions, and clothes completely soaked through.

“I want to say a huge thank you to Mike Trickett, our driver, without whom it wouldn’t have been possible.

“And a thank you to all of our team for taking part in the challenge; we made a great team and we did Jasmine proud.”

Other charities which will receive a share of the money raised include Young Lives vs Cancer (who provide a social worker to Jasmine’s family), The Joshua Tree (charity supporting families affected by childhood cancers), Alder Hey Children’s Hospital cancer ward (where Jasmine has had chemotherapy), Sophie’s Legacy (giving parents vouchers to eat during hospital stays), and The Azaylia Foundation (funding research into early diagnosis and treatment options).
