Plans for 128 new homes in Abergele could be granted this week, despite concerns about traffic.

Cartrefi Developments Ltd has applied to Conwy County Council seeking planning permission for 128 homes at the former Interleisure site on Towyn Road, Pensarn, Abergele.

Conwy’s planning officers have advised councillors to grant the application.

The site was previously occupied by the Pensarn Children’s Camp, which was demolished during or prior to the 1970s.

Whilst planning permission was granted for a new chalet development in 1977 and access and a new chalet built, the site has remained undeveloped.

The 5.1-hectare-of-land site is an open rectangular plot neighbouring the railway, coastal path, and sea defences whilst Towyn Road runs along the southern boundary.

The town council wrote in support of the development but said a play space and a sports area needed to be included in the plans.

Natural Resources Wales had no objection to the application but raised potential flooding issues to be addressed.

One resident wrote to Conwy Council objecting to the plans.

Jo Stuart had several concerns, including about noise and traffic.

“That area of land floods every year. If the new builds do not flood, then where does that water go? The road? The railway? The existing homes?” she asked.

“Where do the animals go who have lived on that land? The plans have bat boxes – are there even bats there? Or is this to make it look like they care? What about the other animals?

“And what about the construction noise? What guarantees do I have that this will not impact my quiet enjoyment of my home? That road is busy enough already, particularly from March to October. Have they taken into account the tourist traffic, which is horrendous?”

She added: “I’m disappointed that the council – who really should be serving the people – doesn’t care at all about the detrimental impact this development will have on the value of my property. This is a disgrace.

“As a taxpayer, I fund the council, and yet I have no say in what is happening.”

Councillors will discuss the application at a planning committee meeting at Bodlondeb on Wednesday 12 June.
