AN AUTHOR who wrote a children’s novel set in Rhyl was the special guest of a performing arts group in the town last week.

On May 29, Work in Progress hosted visiting guest author Daniel Whelan, who spoke to the group about creating characters from his perspective as an author.

He read a section from his award-winning novel, The Box of Demons, and showed members how he formed his characters and used his own community as a source of inspiration.

The group were led through the activities by Daniel led which enabled everyone to create their own cast of demons.

Daniel Whelan said “Visiting Work in Progress was a real pleasure. The group were really quick and enthusiastic and came up with some wonderfully weird creations.

“It was great to be able to connect with such a creative and open group of people, and what co-founders Leslie and Toby have created with Work in Progress is truly impressive.

“It’s a credit to the community it was born from, and I hope it is valued as a true asset for the people of Denbighshire.”

Artistic director Leslie Churchill Ward added: “Work in Progress aims to provide our members with as many opportunities and experiences in the arts as possible.

“This not only helps sustain the arts and artists in our community, but in turn also helps our members explore and appreciate many different perspectives as they grow in confidence expressing themselves.

“It was such a treat for our members to work with Daniel Whelan. Everyone was enthralled as he demonstrated the process of creating characters and plot points, all based on his childhood experiences in Rhyl and Conwy.

“Most of our members had never considered approaching dramatic work this way. They loved his session and commented on how much they learned.”

Those who would like to join the group are encouraged to come along on Wednesday evenings between 6-8pm.
