Wildlife champions of tomorrow are being offered opportunities to build their skills by working at Chester Zoo.

Following the ongoing success of a Level 3 Keeper and Aquarist Apprenticeship Programme over the last 20 months, Derby College Group (DCG) is again working with Chester Zoo in delivering and recruiting for the next intake of apprentices for August 2024.

Chester Zoo and DCG are keen to widen access to conservation jobs to everyone. Anyone from school leavers to those seeking a change in career are encouraged to apply.

DCG is looking to fill 10 keeper and aquarist apprentices, alongside two horticulture operative apprentices to work alongside experienced keepers and professionals in the zoo industry, whereby apprentices will be actively involved in supporting the conservation work of Chester Zoo and sustainability practices.

The apprenticeship roles are incredibly popular, with around 500 people applying at the last intake.

Jen McDermott, Chester Zoo’s head of people and culture, commented: “Each and every one of our apprentices will be trained and mentored by specialist and experienced staff from across the zoo, ensuring they’re ready and equipped with the skills needed to work in a modern conservation zoo.”

'Brilliant opportunity'

Stacey Higgs, curriculum manager at Derby College Group, added: “We are delighted to continue the great work with Chester Zoo. We are very experienced within further education, higher education and apprenticeship routes into animal management and we are delighted to help recruit and train the apprentices under this exciting programme.

“This is a brilliant opportunity for young people and adults alike to earn while they learn and to start their journey in this exciting and flourishing sector with an outstanding wildlife charity.”

The opportunities will allow individuals to gain significant practical experience, whilst also achieving an industry recognised qualification to succeed in their career journey

Chester Zoo was recently ranked the best zoo in the UK by TripAdvisor and also has been listed as the eighth best zoo or aquarium to visit in Europe.
