A NEW Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) will come into force in Rhyl today (April 4).

This gives North Wales Police an additional tool to help deal with individuals and groups of people consuming alcohol and/or causing antisocial behaviour.

The new PSPO is being introduced following a public consultation which gathered feedback on whether it should be implemented, and if this should include antisocial behaviour and street drinking.

Responses to the consultation expressed an overwhelming support for the introduction of the PSPO, its conditions, and the boundaries for the restricted area.

This will be the third PSPO that has been live in Rhyl since 2016 and will be enforceable for a period of three years.

The following places will be covered by the order:

  • Rhyl Promenade from East Parade to Alexandra Road.
  • South from East Parade down Bath Street.
  • From Brighton Road to the junction with Grange Road Bridge and west to Elwy Street.
  • Elwy Street to the junction with Wellington Road.
  • Wellington Road to John Street.
  • John Street to West Parade, including the promenade.

Gary Williams, Denbighshire County Council’s corporate director of business and governance, said: “We are pleased to be introducing a new PSPO for Rhyl town centre following the overwhelming support expressed through our public consultation.

“Whilst Denbighshire County Council works in partnership with North Wales Police and other partner organisations to ensure there are a range of measures in place to help combat antisocial behaviour and street drinking, Rhyl town centre continues to have higher levels than other parts of Rhyl.

“By granting North Wales Police these additional powers for the town centre, we are taking a step in the right direction towards combating the issue and helping to ensure public safety.”
