TWO pupils from a school in Rhyl have been awarded prizes at the Prince’s Trust Awards.

Rhys and Felix, both members of the 'Milestones' class at Ysgol Plas Cefndy, took home awards at the Wales Prince's Trust Awards ceremony in Cardiff.

The Prince’s Trust provide courses, resources and other support to help people aged between 11-30, helping them develop essential life skills, get ready for work and access job opportunities.

The Prince's Trust Awards celebrate the extraordinary achievements of young people supported by The Trust, and their journeys to a positive future. 

Rhys won the Wales Education Award, which recognises young people who have overcome barriers and developed new skills to improve their future prospects through re-engagement in education.

Felix was named as Wales Breakthrough Award winner, which recognises the progress of young people who have developed new skills to enable them to make positive steps towards facing their challenges and stabilising their lives.

Rhys, who won the Wales Education Award, said: “The Prince’s Trust has helped me by allowing myself the freedom to express myself fand explore opportunities while developing my confidence and self-esteem.

"Milestones especially has been a pinnacle turning point for myself allowing me to reintroduce myself into social interactions and build the confidence that will carry me into my future career.

"I’m now studying a Level 3 Uniformed Protective Services at Coleg Llandrillo, this achievement wouldn’t be possible without the support of the Prince’s Trust and Milestones.”

Felix, who was named as Wales Breakthrough Award winner, said: “I was really shocked when I was presented with the award.

"I want to thank milestones for the support they have given me, without them I wouldn’t be here today."

Headteacher Nicola Wynne-Roberts said: “Everyone in Ysgol Plas Cefndy is very proud that the hard work and substantial effort made by both our pupils to overcome significant barriers to learning has been recognised in this way. 

"As the headteacher I also wish to congratulate the team in our milestones class who run the programme and support terrific outcomes for many pupils every year.”

Councillor Gill German, deputy leader of the council and lead member for education and families said: “Winning this award is a testament to the great work that is happening at this school. 

"It is brilliant that both students have been recognised for their hard work and dedication, and I wish them all the best for the future.”
