A club statement read: “All here at Rhyl RFC have been deeply saddened by the recent sudden death of long-time club stalwart, Mervyn Picton.

“Mervyn had been involved with Rhyl RFC in various roles for longer than most of us can remember.

“He was a rugby man through and through, with a particular passion for refereeing.

“He has encouraged, supported and mentored countless people over many years, as anyone involved in North Wales rugby will have seen.

“North Wales rugby will be a poorer place without him in it, and Rhyl RFC would like to offer our sincere condolences to Barry, Kevin, Andy and all Mervyn’s family and friends.”

Mold Rugby Club also paid tribute to Mr Picton, saying: “Merv has been a great servant to rugby in North Wales for many years and was much liked by all.

“It was always a pleasure to have a chat with Merv at a game. Tributes have been pouring in, and they all show how highly respected Merv was.

“I am sure that I speak on behalf of the whole rugby family in wishing the family and friends of Merv our deepest and sincere condolences at this very sad time.”

Mr Picton was also president of the North Wales Rugby Union Referees Society.

Paul Hughes, a fellow member of the society, added: “We have today learned of the passing of our society president, Merfyn Picton.

“Merv has supported all referees at some stage of their refereeing journey... a friend and gentleman to all. He leaves us all with great memories.

“Rest in peace, Merv; you will always be in our thoughts.”
