Police are appealing for witnesses and dashcam footage after a driver reached speeds of 90mph on the motorway.

The incident was widely reported, with two lanes shut on the motorway while police escorted a driver just after 2.15pm on Wednesday, March 6.

Last week, the driver, originally from Prestatyn, said that he thought he would die as, he claimed, his car "started speeding up" and he "had no brakes".

The 31-year-old driver has since been released under investigation after he was arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance on Wednesday, March 13.

Traffic had to be stopped on the motorway as police officers escorted the driver, who said he had dialled 999.

Now, Merseyside Police has asked for witnesses to come forward with any information that could assist their investigation.

In a statement, the force said: “We are continuing to appeal for witnesses and dashcam footage following an incident on the M62 on Wednesday, March 6 when officers from the force's roads policing unit were called to help stop a vehicle safely.

“An investigation, supported by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is ongoing into the incident which involved a black Jaguar I-PACE car.

“Officers are keen to speak to anyone who had dashcam and was travelling between junction 5-4 of the M58, through Switch Island onto the southbound carriageway of the M57 and along the M62 eastbound between J6 and J10-11 between 2.10pm and 2.35pm.

“Anyone who believes they have information or dashcam which could assist the investigation is asked to call the road policing unit 0151 777 5747, or emailing SCIU@merseyside.police.uk quoting reference 24000236727.”

The driver had told officers that he was unable to brake while travelling on the M58 in Merseyside.

Officers attended and escorted the vehicle as it travelled onto the M57 and then onto the M62 eastbound through Warrington.

Once on the M62, officers from Cheshire Police, Merseyside Police, and Greater Manchester Police, worked together to stop all other traffic.

Officers then used a police car to help bring the car to a stop between junction 10 and 11, at around 2.40pm – 25 minutes after they were called.

All traffic was held until the incident was resolved.

A Jaguar Land Rover spokesperson said: “Following a detailed investigation in partnership with the Merseyside Police and other authorities, we understand an individual has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and causing a public nuisance, relating to the incident on the M62 on Wednesday, March 6.

“JLR seeks to investigate all reports of issues relating to product safety and will continue to co-operate with Merseyside Police and the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency where required.”
