A SANDWICH and cake shop in Rhyl priding itself on home baking was crowned the winner of the “new business award” at last week’s Rhyl BID Business Awards 2024.
Neens Butties and Bakes, which was opened on Grange Road by Janine Roberts in September 2022, saw off competition from nine other businesses to win the prize.
Janine said she felt “overwhelmed” to win the award, which she collected in person at the ceremony at 1891 Bar and Restaurant on March 5.

A one-person operation, Neens Butties and Bakes saw Janine turn her hand to running her own business after years of experience in catering.
She said: “I feel overwhelmed, really. I absolutely didn’t expect to win; it was just nice to be nominated and put forward.
“I think I won because I run an outstanding business! I’m a nice person; what you see is what you get. I just wanted to make it work, and I clearly have.
“I love what I do. I enjoy going to work every day and being self-employed; to work for myself is unbelievable.
“It’s grown so much in the last 18 months; it’s been unbelievable. Across the board, it’s been busy, but I just take each day as it comes.”
Given its name because “everybody calls me ‘Neen’”, Janine’s store sells everything from pasta and salad pots, to tasty sandwiches, coffee cakes, vanilla slices and much more.
Her business was the winner of one of 15 awards handed out at last week’s event, celebrating those striving to promote the best Rhyl has to offer.
Janine added: “I couldn’t have done it without my brother and sister-in-law’s help; the support of my family and friends is unreal, and hasn’t changed from day one.
“They’re still there, guiding me, and saw the potential in me that I probably didn’t see.
“The home-baked products people seem to rly like – Lotus Biscoff, rocky roads, but also the fresh sandwiches, and pasta and salad pots, do really well.”
Neens Butties and Bakes is open six days a week, Monday to Saturday.
