A MEMBER of Liverpool FC's EFL Carabao Cup winning squad has his family roots set firmly in Wrexham.

Jurgen Klopp's Reds beat Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley to secure yet another trophy for the cabinet on Sunday, February 25.

What was very impressive about that side was that there were so many academy players who featured or were on the bench.

And eagle-eyed Welsh footie fans may have noticed a familiar surname among those listed in the squad for the final.

The son of former Premier League star Jason Koumas, Lewis, was an unused substitute during the big occasion.

Wrexham-born Koumas senior played youth football at the Liverpool Academy with players such as Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen.

However, he did not sign Youth Training Scheme forms with the club, instead opting to join Tranmere Rovers.

He was signed by West Bromwich Albion for £2.25m in August 2002. Five years later he made the switch to Wigan Athletic, who paid £5.3 million.

The midfielder played 34 times for Wales, scoring 10 goals.

Now, son Lewis will be looking to follow in his father's footsteps, having already secured a Carabao Cup winners medal over the weekend.

And just a few days later, Lewis’ week got that much sweeter as he netted a well-taken debut goal for the Reds in their 3-0 win over Southampton in the FA Cup round of 16 on Wednesday (February 28).

Born in Chester, Lewis is a midfielder/forward who is already being tipped to enjoy a great career in professional football.

Lewis, 18, joined the Liverpool academy as an 11-year old in November 2016, having spent three years with the academy of Tranmere Rovers. 

He then signed his first professional contract with Liverpool in January 2023.

Lewis first appeared in the Reds' senior squad for the first time on December 14, 2023, remaining an unused substitute in a 2–1 loss to Union SG in the Europa League.

He was then, as mentioned, an unused substitute on February 25 in the EFL Cup final, in which Liverpool beat Chelsea 1–0 after extra time.

But it was his full debut for the first team this week that showed his true potential to the world as he netted in the first-half of a 3-0 win over the Saints in the historic FA Cup. 

The young star took to X (formerly Twitter) after the match to write: "A life long dream come true to score on my debut at Anfield, a night I'll never forget. Thank you @LFC."

Also on target twice in that match was Jayden Danns - the son of former Connah's Quay Nomads player Neil, who also played in the Premier League with Birmingham City.

Lewis is eligible to play for England (having been born in Chester), as well as Wales through his father and Cyprus through his paternal grandfather.

The Koumas family roots are set firmly within the Wrexham area.

They have been serving chips to the people of Wrexham since the family first arrived in the town from Cyprus in 1975.

They have had shops in Borras and the town centre and the family currently run the Everland Fish Bar on Market Street.
