YSGOL Esgob Morgan in St Asaph became the first Denbighshire school to be recognised as a “School of Sanctuary” last year.

Recently, the school held an official assembly and award ceremony to celebrate the recognition.

The Bishop of St Asaph was in attendance, as well as former Year Six pupils who had worked towards the award.

Both took part in the celebration assembly.

A School of Sanctuary is a school that has received a Sanctuary Award from City of Sanctuary UK or a partner organisation in recognition of its good practice in fostering a culture of welcome, belonging and solidarity for those seeking safety.

To become a School of Sanctuary, a school must take an intentional and reflective approach to reviewing and refining school practice in relevant areas.

Headteacher at Ysgol Esgob Morgan, Tim Redgrave, said: “I am incredibly proud to receive this award, the first in North Wales, as it is an award which recognises what we do, what we are and what we stand for.

“We have always been proud of our inclusive approach. This is a special place and this award matters.”

Cllr Gill German, deputy leader and lead member for education, children and families, said: "It was an honour to attend the celebration assembly and award ceremony for Ysgol Esgob Morgan as our first Denbighshire School of Sanctuary.

“Developing empathy and understanding in our children and young people is so important and I hope that this will be the first of many Schools of Sanctuary across Denbighshire."
