RHYL pantomime star Arthur Bostrom has spoken of how “fantastic” it is to be in the town as the show continues.

The star is most well known for having played the stumbling British agent Officer Crabtree in ‘Allo ‘Allo! (“good moaning” one of his many errors in ‘French’), which made him a household name.

He is currently playing Dame Trott, the eccentric mother of Jack, in the Pavilion Theatre’s Christmas panto, Jack and The Beanstalk.

Having played the character several times, he said his size makes the Rhyl dame unique.

“This is my sixth time playing the dame – I must be one of the tallest dames at 6ft 4,” he told the Journal.

“I used to watch people doing it in other pantos and watch what they did and you just learn.

“I do it as a man in a frock, as common but trying to be posh and failing.

“She thinks she’s on the way up, money at last, glamour and all of that, but not really.”

He said he is incorporating elements of his ‘Allo ‘Allo! character into the role, despite many of the children likely having never seen the programme.

“It’s difficult to think of the British agent dressed as a gendarme when I’m dressed as a dame, but I will find a way of bringing it in.

“Everybody knows ‘good moaning’ so we’ll get that in, it’s just maybe my dame is learning French.

“To think they weren’t even born when it was on is amazing to me.”

Now living in Liverpool, and having spent years living in the north, Bostrom is familiar with Rhyl, having visited for walks along the coast several times.

“I’ve been to Rhyl before, I live in Liverpool so I used to take the train over, walk along the coast if it’s a nice day.

“I love it, I’ve not done a panto since before the pandemic, and that fact it’s by the sea and the theatre is right on the water is fantastic – it’s stunning and such a great thing to have for Rhyl.”

Alongside Arthur Bostrom are chart-topping singer Chico, Britain’s Got Talent finalist duo Jamie Leahey and Chuck, Casualty star Amanda Henderson, The Bill actor Graham Cole, and Hollyoaks actress Amy-Jane Ollies.

This story follows country boy Jack, who trades the family cow for a handful of magic beans, which grow into an enormous beanstalk reaching up into the clouds.

Jack and The Beanstalk opened at the Pavilion Theatre on December 9, and will run through until New Year’s Eve, December 31.
