CHRISTMAS time in theatreland can mean only one thing – it’s Panto Time.
And this year’s star-studded offering at Rhyl Pavilion Theatre Jack and the Beanstalk has more wonderfully satisfying treats on offer than your favourite festive selection box.
From the outset the audience at this Sunday matinee performance were eager to engage with the usual panto banter, urging the cast and crew of this colourful production to deliver the fun.
Casualty’s Amanda Henderson proved wonderfully heartwarming and feisty Fairy Feebee while The Bill’s Graham Cole was fantastic as the show’s villain Fleshcreep, inviting the crowd to join in one of panto’s fundamental pillars of audience participation 'booing' and 'hissing', by revealing his love of ‘Boo’s at Christmas’.
If Fleshcreep drew disapproving noises the opposite could be said for the arrival of the head of the royal household King Bling, played by former X-Factor contestant Chico onto the stage.
He attracted screams of delight and proclamations of love from theatregoers.
His daughter Princess Jill, was played by the delightful and fantastically sassy Amy-Jane Ollies, making her return to the Pavilion having last been here in 1997 as a member of North Wales School of Dancing.
She provided the love interest for our sweet natured and nervous hero Jack Trott portrayed wonderfully by CBBC’s Mr Bloom, Ben Faulks.
We were also treated to Britain’s Got Talent stars Jamie and Chuck as Silly Billy and Chuck who showcased the versatility of their ventriloquist act with a series of challenging songs and tongue twisting monologues.
And what pantomime would be complete without a dame.
On this occasion we were spoilt with Allo Allo’s Arthur Bostrom as Dame Trott.
His poor command of French, as featured in the classic hit BBC sitcom (‘Good moaning’) and showcased in this show, proved just the beginning of with his first-rate performance.
His Barbie and Ken duet with Chico proved a laugh-out-loud moment.
Other highlights included the 12 Days of Christmas routine complete with slapstick humour, surreal comedy and ‘A Fairy who needs a big wee’; Chico’s performance of his hit It’s Chico Time after a series of false starts.
Along with support from North Wales School or Dancing and Body Rock Dance Academy, this production also featured stunning set design including a Giant and a mammoth inflatable beanstalk.
All in all, Rhyl Pavilion’s production of Jack and The Beanstalk pantomime serves up a perfect slice of festive fun for audiences to enjoy and deserves not to be missed.
