A WOMAN who runs her own hair salon in Rhyl has started a new scheme offering homeless ladies a free dry haircut.

Nicola Hall, of Hair by Nicola, which is based within Body Beautiful Studio on Wellington Road, has created 100 “gift certificates” as a way of “giving a bit back”.

These have been passed on to fundraiser Richard Kendrick and council housing officers, to be distributed among homeless women in the area.

“It’s going to ongoing – I’ve not put an end date on it,” Nicola, who has been based at Body Beautiful Studio for more than a decade, said.

“There was no real reason behind wanting to do this. Everything’s hard at the moment for everyone; it’s just about giving a bit back.

“We did it a couple of years ago at Little Lambs Day Nursery, at a wellbeing day for the parents, and I was really shocked at how many mums didn’t have their hair cut. It’s as if: ‘mum’s last on the list’.

“We cut hair for free that day - I work in a salon with two other girls, so they did free hand massages, and I did free haircuts.

“There are 100 gift certificates, but if it goes well, I don’t see why I won’t carry on making them.”

Nicola’s kind gesture comes soon after a woman who runs a barber shop in Rhyl started offering homeless children in temporary accommodation free haircuts in the lead-up to Christmas.

Nicola Manda, of Nics Barbers on Vale Road, is offering these free haircuts every Tuesday from today (November 28) until December 19, between 9am and 5pm.

Last week, the SeaQuarium attraction in Rhyl also distributed 150 free tickets for homeless and underprivileged families to enjoy, prior to its permanent closure on November 27.
