A FAMILY-run furniture business in Rhyl is set to close this week after roughly 70 years of trading.
“Barnetts”, at 35-37 Wellington Road, was established in 1954, but is shutting its doors following the death of its latest owner, Simon Cabb, on September 12.
It has been holding a “closing down sale”, selling all of its remaining stock at reduced prices, but is due to close by October 20 at the latest.
Nicky Tunnicliff, Simon’s brother, has been helping to oversee the closure of the shop, which was initially set up by her father, Barney.
Her family have previously owned other shops in Rhyl on West Parade and High Street, and at the town’s old Queens Market.

She said: “It was my brother’s shop, but it’s been in the family for years.
“It’ll be the last of our family’s businesses in Rhyl to close down. It’s a bit weird, knowing we won’t have a business here anymore.
“Simon ran it towards the end. I set up my own furniture business in St Asaph, but this was his shop, really, after our mum died.”
In July, the property was put up for sale on Facebook Marketplace, with an asking price set of £85,000.
The unfurnished property includes a bathroom, as well as a rear storage area, kitchen and toilet, with parking also available at the site.
Nicky added: “It’s practically closed now, as we’ve just been selling everything off, but October 20 is hopefully when we shut.
“I didn’t want to keep it open after Simon died. Business in Rhyl isn’t all it used to be, with people going out of town, so it wouldn’t have been something we would have taken over.
“It’s awfully sad because we’ve always had somewhere in Rhyl. It’ll be hard, not having that anymore after such a long time. Everybody knew us, and my dad. It’s been a hard pill to swallow.”
