AN ARCHITECTURAL design business based in Abergele has received national recognition for one of its schemes in the town.
EDGE Architects, which covers North Wales and Cheshire, won the “best small new housing development” prize for its Alltwen scheme at the 2023 LABC Building Excellence Awards.
The development comprises four individual apartments, two occupying the ground floor and two additional duplex style apartments occupying the first and second floors.
The build is of a timber frame construction, and built to current thermal standards.
The original house was demolished in July 2019.

Kathryn Gratton, EDGE Architects director, said: “The original house that stood on the site was the family home of one of the directors of Alltwen Development; therefore, the design had to be right.
“Also, being in a conservation area, the design needed to be fairly in-keeping, yet modern, given its prominent position coming into Abergele.
“To this end, we replicated gable features and, the rendered façade of the original house.
“It was never a development to turn around quickly for profit. The company took care in choosing materials and local contractors to undertake the work.
“The upper floors have fabulous and enviable views of Gopa woods and Gwrych Castle, with some distant sea views.
“We were thrilled to have won the award for the best small housing development in Wales, and received excellent service from the Conwy LABC team throughout the construction period.”
