A NUMBER of the new 20mph speed limit signs in Bodelwyddan have been defaced with graffiti.

The above pictures, taken at various entrances into the village, show the new signs being spray-painted over to depict a 30mph sign.

This is in opposition to the new 20mph limits on most residential roads in Wales, which came into effect on September 17.

From then, most roads in Wales that previously had 30mph speed limits became 20mph, with the First Minister, Mark Drakeford, insistent that it will reduce crashes and save lives.

One of the residents who took some of the above photos said: “Some people aren't sure what section of the roads are the new limit of 20mph.

“Some are now doing 20mph in the zones that are not.”

Another person who took some of the photos said that they, too, were against the new limits.

More than 425,000 signatures have been given to a petition urging Welsh Government to scrap the new 20mph speed limit.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The introduction of a 20mph speed limit in mainly residential areas is designed to save lives and make our communities safer for everyone, including motorists.

“The relevant highway authority will work with the police and repair or replace any signs as quickly as possible.”

A spokesperson for Denbighshire County Council said: “Defacing these road speed limit signs is a criminal act as well as creating a safety risk to drivers.

"The council has made North Wales Police aware of this spate of vandalism regarding county based speed limit signs.”
