CORONATION Street actor Alex Bain was on hand to help a pub in Rhyl under new management re-open its doors last week.

Alex, 21, who has played Simon Barlow in the soap since 2008, celebrated the return of The Barrell, on Water Street, last Friday (August 25).

The pub has a new leaseholder in Scott Dunn, originally from Bootle and now living in Prestatyn, who said he has a history of “turning pubs around”.

Scott has overseen a refurbishment of the premises in the several months that it was closed, and also plans to turn the premises next door into a sports bar.

He said: “We’ve got a good clientele here, and we’ve done really well here the last few days. It’s just running as a nice, proper family pub now.

“Last weekend was a really busy time; we had a really good crowd in.

“He (Bain) is a good mate of mine; he comes down here quite regularly. I think he likes it around here because he doesn’t get mithered!

“We’re just putting the figures together at the moment about turning next door into a sports bar, too.

“I want it to be a nice pub. In the last couple of days, we’ve had kids in here; we had a 21st birthday which was a success; everyone’s just had a really good time.

“We’ve got a karaoke and DJ on every week, while Tuesday will be ‘gay night’, and I’ve bought a new popcorn machine as well!”

The Barrell’s opening times will be 10am until midnight, seven days a week.

Last month, Alex Bain was also spotted checking out a Rhyl vendor’s wares at Tir Prince Market in Towyn.

For his role as Simon Barlow, he won best young performance at the British Soap Awards in 2011, and has been nominated at the awards another four times.
