A MALE passenger was removed from a train at Rhyl railway station yesterday (July 31) after he abused staff.

British Transport Police then removed the man from the station, with enquires into the matter continuing.

It also caused a delay to the train, from Manchester Airport to Llandudno, on which the man had been travelling.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: “At 5.45pm yesterday evening, British Transport Police received a report of an abusive passenger on a train at Rhyl station.

“Officers attended and a man was removed from the station. Enquiries are ongoing.”

Transport for Wales added: “We can confirm the 3.25pm Manchester Airport to Llandudno (train) was delayed by 10 minutes at Rhyl due to an intoxicated male passenger being verbally abusive to staff.

“The passenger was removed from the service.”

A passenger on the train who witnessed the man's behaviour added: "A couple boarded the train from Manchester and sat in the same carriage as me on board the train.

"They were immediately acting loud and obnoxious and it seemed very likely they were drunk.

"When the guard came through to check tickets, the man was immediately up in the face of the guard, being rude and aggressive.

"The guard informed them that if they didn't behave appropriately he would have them removed from the train.

"They did quieten down for a while but he later had to speak to them again because they were playing music really loudly.

"In-between the guard's walk-throughs of the train they were making offensive and vulgar comments about him and then the man came back from the toilet at the same time the guard was again checking tickets he got in his face yet again and was acting even more aggressive.

"Their behaviour escalated, and ultimately, the guard had enough and got assistance to have the man removed at Rhyl.

"Unfortunately, despite me having contacted British Transport Police about the incident in the Warrington Bank Quay area, no police presence showed up, and in the end, the guard and a member of station staff at Rhyl had to handle the situation themselves with the staff member at Rhyl, fortunately managing to convince the man to get off the train.

"After this, our train was able to depart although the man was clearly still acting aggressively on the platform.

"Throughout the journey, he and his partner had clearly been continuing to drink as an empty bottle of wine was left behind which someone else pointed out was full when they boarded.

"The guard on the train was excellent in his handling of the situation, being extremely professional and dealing with a very difficult situation very well."
