AN APPLICATION to make amendments to a pedestrian access path in Rhyl as part of ongoing coastal defence improvement works in the town have been given the go-ahead.

The amendment is to realign the path which links the town’s promenade with West Parade.

It was submitted to Denbighshire County Council (DCC)’s planning committee on July 3 by Tim Towers, of the council’s Highways department, and approved yesterday (July 27).

This path is located between the mini-golf and theatre within Drift Park.

The amendment will see the path moved immediately to the north-east of its existing location, onto the position of the existing adjacent ramp/viewing platform.

Extracts from a covering letter read: “Following consultation with the existing mini-golf business in this area of the scheme, it was identified that there is an existing antisocial behaviour concern with the existing viewing platform in this area.

“The amendment intends to address this concern by removing this existing dead-end space and incorporate it into the access path from the road to the raised promenade.”

DCC’s Highways department raised no objections to Mr Towers’ proposals.

Parts of West Promenade in Rhyl closed on April 24 as the construction of the Central Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme got underway.

Rhyl’s West Promenade partially closes for coastal defence work to begin

Drift Park play area, on West Parade, was demolished in March while the work is undertaken, but is due to re-open with new equipment following completion of the work.

The old sea walls and pavements are to be taken away to enable this part of the promenade to be raised and expanded.

DCC has worked with its partner, Balfour Beatty, to design schemes in both Rhyl and Prestatyn, and their combined cost is £92million.

Supported by Welsh Government funding, the new coastal structures will further reduce the risk of flooding, and aim to provide reassurance to communities in the face of rising sea levels caused by climate change.

The works are due to take two-and-a-half years to complete.
