A SCHOOL in St Asaph has become the first “Church in Wales School” in North Wales to be awarded as a “School of Sanctuary”.

Ysgol Esgob Morgan has become a School of Sanctuary after going above and beyond statutory requirements.

The awarding body visited the school this week, where they spent time talking to pupils, staff and governors, and looking at the work children had produced.

Leyla Beattie, Wales co-ordinator for City of Sanctuary, told the school: “We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit to your school.

“The children spoke with such knowledge and passion - you should all be very proud.”

Cara Drumm, teacher at Ysgol Esgob Morgan, first read about the School of Sanctuary network in 2021, and thought it was exactly what the school stood for.

She said: “We pride ourselves on being a school that is a place of safety and inclusion for all.

“Every child in our school has a voice and has been part of this journey, enthusiastically taking part in learning experiences that will help them to become ethical and informed citizens of Wales who will embrace and celebrate diversity in the world around them.

“It has truly been a whole school and community effort, and we are so proud of all our pupils.”

Headteacher Tim Redgrave added: “To be the first in North Wales is a bonus, but the best thing about being a School of Sanctuary is the fact that this is what we are, always have been and always will be.

“I am, once again, incredibly proud of this school.”
